A Look Back In History: Madagascar

Travel Guides

Home to Constance Tsarabanjina, this island paradise provides the perfect location for a Robinson Crusoe-like getaway and has an intriguing history to match.

The island of Madagascar is a jewel to behold, with striking beauty at every angle and a diverse culture to explore.

For over two centuries, the culture has evolved. Guests can delight in the delicious food and stunning architecture, and maybe purchase some Malagasy art or clothing.

Cultural roots

Stretching along the southeast coast of Africa, Madagascar saw its first residents 2,000 years ago. Originating from Borneo, they settled in the highlands.

Soon, they were joined by Indonesian and Arab traders who favoured the stunning coastal areas. Known for its powder-soft sand and crystal clear water, guests can still enjoy it.

Malagasy culture is a combination of many traditions, rooted in tribal customs. Music and dance typical of African and Indonesian culture remain a large part of festivals. Guests can also spot elements of Indian, French and Chinese culture during their stay.

This tropical island is now home to 18 subcultures, offering a rich range of traditions and beliefs.

Island Of Craft

The people of Malagasy boast of incredible craftsmanship. This includes intricately embroidered cloth made from cotton which is still grown and produced on the island today.

Guests can indulge in fabrics and take a piece of Malagasy culture home. Whether it is a dress or a hand-woven hat, the boutique is full of amazing finds.

Golden Age Pirates

After years of failed attempts to establish trading settlements, the first Europeans to successfully establish themselves on the island were pirates. Between 1650 and 1720 pirates held a firm grip on the east coast. Madagascar was the perfect base for pirates to ambush ships heading back to Europe.

Well-known figures are thought to have spent much time on the island, including Blackbeard and William Kidd. An unexpected part of Madagascan history, but no less interesting.

French Influence

The French began to extend their influence after many attempts. The French succeeded in their quest in 1896.

Madagascar was set on a path of development. The raw materials that the island offered were taken advantage of and cities and ports were built in order to trade vanilla, ylang-ylang and much more. The French also introduced infrastructure such as health care services.

Modern Madagascar

Now an independent state, this glorious island still thrives in its beauty and boasts an interesting history.

Guests can recognise the influences throughout Constance Tsarabanjina, noting the small yet impactful traditions which have descended from the island’s many groups of inhabitants.
