MCB Tour Championship
Celebrating the Legacy of the MCB Tour Championship with Constance Hotels & Resorts
“Special”. “Quite incredible”. “The best venue I’ve played a tournament at”. “On and off the course, it’s impossible to fault”.
Those were just a few of the comments made by the players from the Legends Tour who competed in the 2024 MCB Tour Championship Mauritius.
It is a week during which new friendships have been made, old ones enhanced, and a thousand memories etched in the minds of all who competed at
Constance Belle Mare Plage – whether amateur or professional.
Peter Baker took the title in a play-off and Adilson da Silva the order of merit award, but they were far from the only winners – with amateurs enjoying the experiences of a lifetime at the Indian Ocean paradise island.
Of course, the setting, the resort, the staff and the general ambiance of Constance Belle Mare Plage were key components in one of the treasured weeks on the golfing calendar.
Who better than Ryder Cup legend Colin Montgomerie to sum up what those competing, spectating and generally enjoying life at Belle Mare Plage experienced?
“It is a very special place. I won here in 2017 and it’s a pity it's taken me until now to come back. And as I looked at the beach scene when I arrived, I regretted it even more!” the eight-time order of merit champion said.
“The beauty of this place and both Constance resorts – Belle Mare Plage and Prince Maurice – are just stunning.
“And we have been so well hosted. Everything regarding the hotel is first class.
“I've been very fortunate in my life to have travelled the world and stayed at some beautiful resorts, but I must say, and I'm not just saying this because I'm sitting here looking at this incredible view, but this is just the best of a lot.”
At the other end of the glorious kaleidoscope that makes up the world’s millions and millions of golfers is Trevor Cardon.
The Englishman only took golf up 10 years ago and has a handicap that hovers around 13. A big contrast to Montgomerie, one of the greats of the modern game, then.
But he is equally effusive with his praise for Belle Mare Plage and the festival of golf that is Legends Tour week they host.
“It’s just wonderful. We have been coming to Belle Mare Plage for more than 30 years!” he said. “It has been our end-of-year treat to ourselves.
“Of course, now I have extra reason to love coming here - the golf. For the first 20 years I never set foot on the courses, now I will play every day when I’m here.
“Most people marginally prefer the Legends to the Links but I love them both. And then you get paired up with someone like Phil Price, a Ryder Cup hero, in the Pro-Am and it’s just so much fun. They are all real gents and make it so enjoyable.”
Montgomerie led his team – alongside Loic Max, Dominic Provencal and Vincent Cambier – to first place on 91 points in the MCB Pro-Am gross category.
The net winners were Jeev Milkha Singh with Vincent Quero, Arnaud Blanc and Jean Phillipe Rodenburger, with 109 points.
The previous day, the Constance Hotels Pro-Am saw Miguel Angel Martin with Jean-Francois Vallet, Emmanuel Corneille and Loic Max win on 80 points. Robert Coles alongside Adeline Lagesse, Antony Lam and Etienne Koenig took the net prize with 92.
Needless to say, these competitions and these memories aren’t made by chance. The hosting of such an incredible week is an alliance, a tour de force, of various different elements all coming together to combine their expertise and resources to host the season-ending event on the Legends Tour.
The Mauritius Commercial Bank (MCB), Constance Hotels, Resorts & Golf, Air Mauritius, and the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA) were once again the key partners in the 2024 vintage.
It is now 15 years since Constance Belle Mare Plage first began its affiliation with the European Senior Tour, now known as the Legends Tour, with sister hotel Constance Lemuria on the island of Praslin in Seychelles hosting in 2018.
Main sponsor, The Mauritius Commercial Bank not only host the MCB Tour Championship - whose prize fund is now an impressive $1,000,000 - but has also become the sponsors the order of merit race, the MCB Road To Mauritius.
The longstanding hosting of the event means Constance Hotels & Resorts has positioned Mauritius and the Seychelles as golf destinations and demonstrate the group’s commitment to offering high-quality, luxury experiences as well as excellence in sports and hospitality.
The 13th edition of the MCB Tour Championship was one of the most memorable, whether you were a Ryder Cup legend or a newcomer to the game. As we said at the start: special.
